What happened to all the talk about the old dump and the supposed soil testing? What was the result? I want to know if the soil in the area with salt intrusion is contaminated with old dump material including heavy metal, petrolium products or any old transformers that may have been buried.
Yes, the salt needs to be stopped past Jasmine. The tree kill is a disgrace. I have no doubt it was caused by salt intrustion into the area north of Jasimine Street. Why do I say this? I walked this area 4 to 5 times a week for about a year during and before the greenway gates opened. The change was dramatic and ugly.
Using an area for mitigation should not relieve you of any responsibility for impact on surrounding areas and it does not relieve you of responsibility for environmental impact from pollutants not tested for in advance.

I am with you 100%! I am sick of hearing excuses and watching trees die. Your suggestions are "on the money", pardon the intended pun. But are we barking up the wrong tree? (sorry) What can we DO to make this happen? I was at the last City Council meeting and all that FDOT could say is that they are afraid that there will be a large fish kill if they change it to fresh water again. Well, I hate to kill anything, but we can't just sit here on our thumbs! Joe G. recommended plugging the "hole" at Jasmine for now, until FDOT could do their job correctly this time. Atleast that would stop the salt intrusion and maybe save the few trees that are left. He seemed to be the only motivated person on the board at that meeting. There was LOTS of motivation in the audience, however. Fernandina has spoken, now lets see FDOT put their $$$ where their mouths are and do something for compensation to us all, and fix the problem. Can you imagine what the FDOT would do if one of US had caused this fiasco?
Contacting your Commissioner is only one way to get something done. Directly contacting Army Corp of Engineers, DEP, and St. John's is all going to put this area under scrutiny. There are other agencies that can help with this and that should be involved.
